IRC is first introduced in Finland on 1988, and from 1990, it is also used in Japan.
Based on wide-area distributed technology, IRC is a system allowing users to "chat" (by typing in text from their computer keyboards) in real time over the Internet.
WIDE's IRC Working Group is working on technologies for operating large-scale systems of this sort with optimum stability and safety, and at low cost of management. A protection technique against DDoS attack to public services of this kind is also a focused topic of our research.
It is also carrying out research on utilizing an "Message Transfer System on Application Layer", which is a feature of IRC.
