NSPIXP6

Motivation
- IPv6 is still experimental
- Not "fully supported" yet
- Experimental service has been started
- Since mid 1999 by an ISP in JP
- Need a place for ISPs to meet, anyway
- WIDE hosts an experimental IX for IPv6
- Operational since Aug 1999
- Same location as NSPIXP-2
- Don't have to pay circuit cost only for IPv6
- However, they are separated
Design
- Why "different" switch?
- No vacant port was available in NSPIXP-2
- 4 Gigaswitches + 2 SSR8600 (in Aug 1999)
- BigIron8000 added in 2000
- FDDIs are being retired
- ISPs have different routers for IPv4 & IPv6
- No dual stack router is in operation
- Need to evaluate how IPv6 behaves at IX
Topology
- A FastEthernet Switch
- Just for experimental
- No redundant configuration
- Connection is for free
- Extending to remote sites
- Accomodate remote ISPs
- IPv6 ISPs are not populated
- It helps remote ISPs get connected
- To Toyama via JGN ATM PVC
- To Osaka via WIDE GbE VLAN
- IPv6 related Events
- L2-extention to INET2000 & IPv6Summit
Topology
Traffic
Future Plans
- NSPIXP-6 service
- Replace 24port SW with 48port SW
- Still experimental, separated from NSPIXP-2
- Make NSPIXP-2 dual stack
- IPv6 introduces no harm to L2 SW
- ISPs at NSPIXP-2 agree with IPv6 traffic
- Extra ports (FE) for IPv6 are available
- No ISP is operating dual stack router
- Distributed NSPIXP-2 being planned
- Using the same VLAN as IPv4

6iix
- A set of IPv6 IXes by Telehouse
- New York
- A few IPv6 ISPs are there
- 25 Broadway
- 60 Hudson (planned)
- Santa Clara, CA
- Los Angeles, CA
- L2 interconnect is being planned
- Bandwidth is limited, however
